Why application forms have them
A popular vacancy attracts more than applicants. Automated programs submit junk, fake candidates, advertising and attempts to break into the system. A captcha is the employer's way of checking that a person is on the other end before accepting the form.
They come in a few kinds. Some ask you to type distorted characters or pick out pictures. Some are a single tick box. And some are invisible: they score your visit in the background, from your connection, your browser and how the page was used, and only show a challenge if the score looks doubtful.
When a captcha will not let you through
Real people are turned away by these checks more often than you might think. If a form says it could not verify you, or that your application was "flagged as possible spam", work through this list:
- Turn off your VPN or proxy. Shared addresses are the commonest reason for a low score.
- Use your everyday browser, up to date, with cookies and JavaScript allowed for the site. Private windows and strict privacy extensions lower the score.
- Wait ten or fifteen minutes before trying again. Repeated attempts in a short time make it worse.
- Try another network, such as mobile data.
- Tell the employer. If nothing works, email their recruitment team. They would rather hear from you than lose an applicant.
What happens when Jobofinder applies for you
Jobofinder fills in application forms for you, and a form with a captcha is no exception up to the point where the captcha appears. Then it stops.
- The application is paused and you get an alert: in the app, on your phone, by email, and on WhatsApp if you have switched that on.
- You open the alert and see the live form, enlarged, with the captcha in front of you.
- You solve it. On WhatsApp, a captcha made of characters arrives as a picture and you can simply reply with the characters.
- The application is submitted and you are told it went through.
You have twenty minutes, and the alert is repeated if you miss it.
Why it does not solve them itself
There are services that will solve captchas for a fee, and tools that try to make automated visits look human. Jobofinder uses neither. A captcha is the employer asking for a person, and the honest answer is to fetch one. It also keeps you safe: an application that was pushed through a check the employer put there on purpose is not one you want your name on.
The same goes for sites that refuse automated visitors altogether. When a site turns Jobofinder away, it tells you, marks the job "apply yourself", and gives you the link.
Common questions
Does Jobofinder solve captchas for me?
No. It does not use captcha-solving services or tricks to get round them. It pauses the application, alerts you, and shows you the live form. You solve the captcha yourself and the application continues.
How long do I have to solve it?
Twenty minutes. The alert is repeated if you miss it. If the time runs out, the application is not sent, and you can start it again or apply by hand with the job's link.
Why was my own application flagged as possible spam?
Usually because of something about the connection or the browser, not about you: a VPN, a browser that blocks cookies or scripts, or several attempts in a short time. Turn the VPN off, use your everyday browser, wait a few minutes and try again.
