The trouble with looking for part-time work

Part-time jobs are rarely called "part-time job". The advert says sales assistant, kitchen porter, receptionist or library assistant, and the hours are a line further down. To find them all you would have to search for dozens of titles on several job sites, and then do it again tomorrow, because the good ones are filled within days.

Jobofinder turns that around. You say where you are and that you want part-time work. It asks the job boards for every advert in that place that is marked as part-time, and brings you the new ones.

How the search works

  1. Choose "Any part-time job". It is one of the ready-made searches at the top of the search form. The job title box is left empty on purpose.
  2. Choose your country and town. Jobs that name another country are left out, so a search in the United Kingdom does not fill up with jobs in Berlin or Boston.
  3. Say how far you can travel. Only the town, or up to 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 kilometres from it.
  4. Read what arrives. New matches come as one message in the morning and one in the evening, at the times you choose: in the app, by email, and on WhatsApp if you switch that on. Each job has a link to its advert.

Before you start the search you can press "Show matching jobs" and see what it finds today. Nothing is sent anywhere until you are happy with it.

Narrowing it down

Every part-time job in a large city is a long list, and a search hands you at most 50 new jobs a day. Three things make the list shorter without missing what you want:

  • Leave out titles. Type the words you never want to see, for example "driver" if you do not drive, or "senior".
  • Shorten the distance. A 5 kilometre circle around your town is a very different list from a 25 kilometre one.
  • Name the work instead. If you know you want bar work or tutoring, type that as the job title and set the hours to "Part-time only". A job is then left out only if its advert says it is full-time.

What you get, and what you do not

Jobofinder is not a job board. It does not publish adverts and it has no jobs of its own. It searches job boards and employers' careers pages on your behalf and tells you what is new. For a job-board advert you follow the link and apply on the employer's site. Where Jobofinder finds the same vacancy on the employer's own careers page, it gives you that link instead, so you land on the application form itself. Where you add an employer's own careers page, and that page runs on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Recruitee, Workable, Teamtailor, Personio or Breezy, Jobofinder can fill in and send the application for you, and hands you the captcha if there is one.

It covers what is advertised on the sources it searches. A card in a shop window, or a job that is only passed on by word of mouth, will not be in it, so keep asking around as well.

If you are a student

How many hours you may work, and what you must be paid, depends on the country and sometimes on your visa. We have written a guide for each of the countries where most of our student customers are: the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and India.

Common questions

Do I need to know what the job is called?

No. The search called "Any part-time job" has no job title at all. It collects every job that is advertised as part-time in the place you chose. If you do have a title in mind, such as barista or care assistant, type it and set the hours to part-time instead.

How far from my town does it look?

You choose: only the town itself, or up to 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 kilometres away. The job board measures the distance from the town, so a job in the next town along is included.

Does it apply for me?

For job-board adverts you get a link and apply on the employer's site yourself. If you add an employer's own careers page to the search, and that page runs on one of the application systems Jobofinder can fill in, it can send the application for you.

Is there a free version?

No. There is no free trial; the Basic plan costs 10 dollars a month and includes one search like this. You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
