Why timing matters for internships

An internship programme has a fixed number of places and, very often, a short window. Many employers look at applications in the order they arrive and close the advert once they have enough. The student who applies on the first day is read by someone with time; the one who applies in the last week may not be read at all.

You cannot refresh twenty careers pages every morning for months. A standing search can.

Two ways to use it

Cast a wide net

Choose "Internships and placements" from the ready-made searches, pick your country, and tick the job boards. Every new advert with intern, internship, placement or working student in its title reaches you in the morning or evening round-up, with a link.

Aim at the employers you want

Add the careers pages of the employers at the top of your list. Jobofinder reads them directly. Where a page runs on an application system it can fill in, it applies for you as soon as a matching internship appears, using the details, answers and CV in your profile. If the form shows a captcha or asks something new, it comes to your phone and continues when you have answered.

If an employer has told you that applications open on a certain date, set a vacancy watch on that page instead. It waits for the posting and acts within minutes of it going up.

Before you start: three things to prepare

  • A CV that reads well with little experience. Coursework, projects, societies and part-time jobs all count. Our guide to writing a CV with no experience shows how.
  • Answers to the usual questions. Right to work, when you can start, how long you are available. Save them once in your profile and they are used on every form. See answering application questions.
  • Your right to work. If you study on a visa, the rules on internships differ by country. Check the guide for your country before you apply.

What it will not do

Jobofinder sends the application you would have sent, sooner. It does not invent experience: where the Pro plan rewrites your CV for a posting, it works only from what is in your own CV, and afterwards shows you every line it changed. It also cannot make an employer choose you. What it can do is make sure your application is among the first on the pile.

Common questions

Which adverts does this search find?

Jobs whose title contains intern, internship, placement or working student (and "Werkstudent", the German term). It matches whole words, so "International Sales Manager" and "Internal Auditor" are not mistaken for internships.

Can it apply for me?

On an employer's own careers page that runs on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Recruitee, Workable, Teamtailor, Personio or Breezy, yes: it fills in the form with your details and CV, and hands you the captcha or any question it has no answer for. For job-board adverts you get a link and apply yourself.

Can it wait for an internship that has not been advertised yet?

Yes. A vacancy watch checks one page, such as an employer's internship page, around the clock and acts the moment a posting with the title you named appears.

Does it cover unpaid internships?

It finds what employers advertise and does not know whether a role is paid. Read the advert. In many countries an intern who does real work must be paid at least the minimum wage, and our country guides link to the official rules.
