Applying on LinkedIn, Indeed and other job boards

The big job boards do not allow programs to apply from your account. Here is why that matters to you, and what you can still do to save time there.

Why the big boards are different

LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri and Glassdoor are not just lists of jobs. You have an account there, with a profile, contacts and a history, and you apply while signed in. Their terms of use forbid operating that account with automated tools, and they look for it: unusual speed, activity around the clock, a browser that behaves like a program.

When they find it they restrict or close the account. For most people that account is worth far more than the time an "auto-apply bot" would have saved.

What Jobofinder does instead

Jobofinder draws a line here on purpose.

  • It never signs in to these sites and never asks for their passwords.
  • It applies on the employer's own careers page. Most jobs you see on a job board are also on the employer's site, and that is where the application ends up anyway.
  • It brings you job-board adverts as alerts, each with a link, from job boards whose published programming interfaces allow it.

Saving time on job-board forms, safely

On the Pro plan there is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Brave. It is for the applications you make yourself.

  1. Open a job's application form in your own browser, signed in as yourself.
  2. Press the extension's button.
  3. Your name, contact details and saved answers are typed into the form, and your CV is attached.
  4. You read it through, fix anything that needs fixing, and press the site's own submit button.

It fills only the page you are looking at, only when you press the button. It never submits a form and never presses "Next". It leaves captchas, and questions it has no saved answer for, to you, and marks them so you can see them.

Doing it by hand, faster

If you apply on job boards without any extension, three habits save most of the time:

  • Keep your profile on each board complete and current, since "easy apply" forms are filled from it.
  • Keep a note of your standard answers to paste in. See answering application questions.
  • Follow the advert to the employer's site when you can. An application made there is often more complete, and it is where Jobofinder can take over the next one.

A warning about tools that promise more

Any service that asks for your LinkedIn or Indeed password, or offers to "apply to hundreds of jobs while you sleep" on those sites, is asking you to break the site's rules with your own account. Some of them also keep the password. If you are tempted, read the site's terms first, and decide whether the account is something you can afford to lose.

Common questions

Can Jobofinder apply for jobs on LinkedIn or Indeed for me?

No. It never signs in to LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri or Glassdoor and does not accept their passwords. Automatic applications are made on employers' own careers pages. For job boards, the browser extension fills in the form in your own browser when you press its button, and you submit it yourself.

Is the browser extension allowed on those sites?

It works the way a password manager or your browser's own autofill does: it types your saved details into the form in front of you, when you ask, and you press submit. It does not browse, click through jobs or submit anything by itself. Each site sets its own rules, and you are responsible for following them.

Could my account be suspended for using an auto-apply bot?

Yes. The large job boards forbid automated use of an account in their terms and restrict or close accounts that they detect doing it. An account with years of contacts and history is a lot to lose for a few saved minutes.
